Staycation Family Camp at the Buell!

It’s hard sometimes to get timing and resources to line up for a vacation. To celebrate its 25th birthday, the Buell Children’s Museum has decided to do something about it. For the month of July, we invite you to our Family Staycations! Bring your favorite adult to enjoy a fun filled, hands on learning experience - featuring science, art, cooking, creative movement.

Pick six classes for $195 which includes one adult and one child ($49 for each additional person). Additional classes are $25 for two people. Sign up at the front desk at the Buell or call 719.295.7210. Each week has different classes, Keep scrolling to view information about the classes below.

  • Tuesday, July 15 | 2:30PM - 3:30PM | Chemistry in the Kitchen - Butter Class: 

    • How and why do we make it! In this class you will learn about healthy fats and have the opportunity to make their butter through kinetic energy transference. This class is led by Chef Myranda from B Street Café.

  • Tuesday, July 15 | 3:30PM - 4:30PM | Aerodynamics & Airplanes:

    • In this session you will study various designs of paper airplane construction. What forms work best for balance? What forms work best for height? What forms better for longer flights? We will test our designs and see which work the best. Will your plane fly further?

  • Wednesday, July 16 | 2:30PM - 3:30PM | Play with Paint:

    • Art class to exercise your creativity. More information on medium and types of art classes to come!

  • Wednesday, July 16 | 3:30PM - 4:30PM | Popsicle Stick Bridge Build: 

    • Students design a bridge using only popsicle sticks and glue.  (Parents will help with the hot glue.) Principles of engineering and design will be utilized in this workshop. We’ll test each bridge’s strength by gradually adding rocks or weights to see which design holds the most! This session is hosted by CSU student facilitator Vashti Trujillo.

  • Thursday, July 17 | 2:30PM - 3:30PM | Creative Movement and Folk Dance:

    • Dance with Katie Farmer from the Sangre de Cristo School of Dance. Explore fundamental dance concepts with fun dance activities and learn a folk dance!

  • Thursday, July 17 | 3:30PM - 4:30PM | Ciphers and Code-Breaking: The Art of Secret Messages:

    • Ever wondered how a ship sends out an S.O.S. or how spies send secret messages? Learn about this and how to create your own coded language with instructor Elise Olson. In this hour long class you’ll put your logic to the test and create your very own cipher tool to take home!

      • Chef Myranda from B Street Café will be back to teach us all how to make our very own Frog Eyes.

    • Tuesday, July 22 | 3:30PM - 4:30PM | Nature's Support Puzzle:

      • A local hobby Paleontologist donated a complete cow skeleton to our museum! Be the first to put nature’s puzzle together! We will work together as a group, moving through the anatomy of the cow, until we have the complete skeleton assembled.  How do we balance? Why don’t we fall over? How do we keep our bones strong and healthy? Join us to discover if indeed the shin bone is connected to the ankle bone.

    • Wednesday, July 23 | 3:30PM - 4:30PM | Water Bottle Rockets: 

      • Using ideas from engineering and technology, students and parents will build rockets from recycled plastic bottles and launch them using water and air pressure. We'll discuss basic rocket physics and see which designs fly the farthest. This session is hosted by CSU student facilitator Vashti Trujillo.

      • Dance with Katie Farmer from the Sangre de Cristo School of Dance. Take your cue from all the fantastic creatures in our world and learn to dance like the animals! 

    • Thursday, July 24 | 3:30PM - 4:30PM | Chemistry in the Kitchen - The Science of Cupcake Making, Frostings and Decorating!:

      • We all love cupcakes, right? Before diving into the specifics of what makes a cupcake perfect, it’s essential to understand how it’s created and the importance of high-quality ingredients.  Frosting and glazes are more than just decorative elements.  They are crucial elements for making the perfect cupcake! You will leave this class with the beautiful cupcakes you create! 

    • Tuesday, July 29 | 2:30PM - 3:30PM | Chemistry in the Kitchen - Tortilla Making & Quesadillas!: 

      • Join us to combine ingredients, roll, shape and cook our tortillas in this fun food class!!  Tortillas or some version of flat soft bread is made all over the world. In Pueblo, tortillas are an art form. This session will focus on making homemade flour tortillas, including a salsa bar and yummy cheese to eat your homemade chemistry experiment!  Experience the delicious pride of eating what you’ve made!

    • Tuesday, July 29 | 3:30PM - 4:30PM | Color and Movement - Kaleidoscopes:

      • This session is both science and art. Using a kaleidoscope is a fun but making your own is twice the fun!  Kaleidoscopes provide a unique experience that continues to entertain and delight even now! Join us as we assemble easy to do Kaleidoscopes. We will have everything you need to get you started creating beautiful patterns inside and decorating your kaleidoscope outside! Show us what your galaxy looks like!

    • Wednesday, July 30 | 2:30PM - 3:30PM | Ojos de Dios or God’s Eyes:

      • This is an ancient craft that uses both geometry and creative choice to make a beautiful little piece of art and has been made by generations of folks in many cultures around the world. Utilizing the principles of design, our host will guide you through the process of creating your own. Multiple colors are available, and you are welcome to bring some yarn of your favorite color too.

    • Wednesday, July 30 | 3:30PM - 4:30PM | Parachute Egg Drop: 

      •  Teams will design and build a parachute system to keep an egg safe during a drop. This activity explores gravity, air resistance, and safe landing strategies. This could be messy so dress accordingly.  This session is hosted by CSU student facilitator Vashti Trujillo.

    • Thursday, July 31 | 2:30PM - 3:30PM | Creative Movement & Maraca's:

      • Dance with Katie Farmer from the Sangre de Cristo School of Dance.  In this class you will explore rhythm and movement and make your own percussion instrument to take home!

    • Thursday, July 31 | 3:30PM - 4:30PM | Volcano Making:

      • This session is a creative science project that utilizes geometry, crafting skills, and a little bit of chemistry. Your host will guide you through the process of crafting a miniature model volcano, decorating it, and then creating the eruption! We will explain what is happening in each part of your creation and why. Make sure to bring your cell phone to this class so you can video your exploding volcano!
